The term Capitalist Realism was a tongue-in-cheek amalgamation of capitalism and Socialist Realism, referring to the two divisive factions of German society – the capitalist West and the Socialist Realist East. It was these two opposing ideas that they were attempting to play with and critique within their art. In terms of mental health, the breakdown of capitalist realism is not only a social breakdown, but also a psychic breakdown that condenses the forms and processes of the continual series of breakdowns and crises that compose capitalism. 1 It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism In one of the key scenes in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film Children of Men, Clive Owen’s character, Theo, visits a friend at Battersea Power Station, which is now some combination of government building and private collection. Capitalist Realism was only artificially preserved as a movement, and marketing device, by the Berlin dealer René Block; its afterlife in his gallery into the 1970s is the subject of the show’s Don’t have the book with me, but my understanding is that a full articulation of the sentence would be something like: „From a situation in which due to the near-total hegemony of capitalist realist thinking that has made it easier for us to imagine the end of the world than any substantive change in our social relations, coming to understand thA phrase that has almost become a cliché, capitalist realism points to a failure of imagination, suggesting that it is now easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. As one looks around the world today, the case for capitalist realism is, admittedly, disturbingly persuasive – as Fisher himself was the first to admit Capitalist realism Thirteen years on – and nearly six years after Fisher’s tragic death by suicide – Capitalist Realism has acquired a near hallowed status on the left. The New StatesmanBerge explain in their study Reading Capitalist Realism: Realism, as described by Fisher, is not a representational mode or aesthetic. It is instead a gen- eral ideological formation [OBN] in which capitalism is the most real of our horizons, the market-dominant present that forms the limits of our imaginaries. A Reproduction of Capitalist Realism is the first exhibition in the US to take an in-depth look at the phenomenon of Capitalist Realism, which for a short period was synonymous with a specific style of post-war West German art. The exhibition aims to articulate this term’s relevance to the social and cultural developments of the past fifty “Capitalist Realism was another form of provocation. This term somehow attacked both sides: It made Socialist Realism look ridiculous, and did the same to the possibility of Capitalist Realism as well.” —Gerhard Richter Capitalist Realism was launched in 1963 in Germany by the artists Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Konrad Lueg (later to become the dealer Konrad Fischer) not as a How they began that climb is the subject of a fascinatingly odd exhibition from Artists Space called “Living With Pop: A Reproduction of Capitalist Realism,” which has the distinction of beingCorporate anti-capitalism wouldn’t matter if it could be differentiated from an authentic anti-capitalist movement. Yet, even before its momentum was stalled by the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, the so called anti-capitalist movement seemed also to have conceded too much to capitalist realism. February 26, 2021 I’ve just published my fourth book of collected essays, Beyond Capitalist Realism: The Politics, Energetics, and Aesthetics of Degrowth. I’ve posted the introduction below, which includes overviews of each chapter. Footnote 4 I use the term ‘capitalist realism’ in describing Goon Squad in this essay rather than ‘neoliberal’ because reading the neoliberal sensibilities of Egan’s text, while completely valid, centres the focus too much on extratextual pressures rather than the particular ways in which the novel’s realism functions within Once you accept this, whether it is true or not, there is only the pursuit of pleasure. Fisher calls this ‘ depressive hedonia: ’ wherein constant distraction and stimulation is the only solution to hopelessness. He cites his experience teaching hopeless students– Capitalism’s new illiterates.
